Ghislaine Howard, Demolition Scene Salford: Grain Elevator no.2

Notes

This painting is of the demolition of Grain Elevator No.2 at Salford Docks. The Docks were, in their heyday, one of the busiest ports in the world and one of the most iconic buildings at the Docks was Grain Elevator No2. This structure, built in 1915, was so large that it took nearly 3 months to demolish in 1983, including some time where it teetered at an almost impossible angle – a photograph of the demolition is entitled “I refuse to die”. On the site now stands the Anchorage Building, one of the first office blocks built as part of the redevelopment of Salford Quays.
