Alan Lowndes, An Actor

An Actor depicts its subject with his head bent, slowly moving through the backstage area of a theatre. This painting was in the collection of Charles Laughton, the celebrated British Actor who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1933, was nominated on two other occasions and who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. We believe that the subject of the painting is Laughton himself.

Laughton and his wife Elsa became good friends of Lowndes and owned a dozen of his paintings, which were on show at their house in California. After the death of Laughton and his wife, the painting was acquired by Betty Goldfield, the renowned art appraiser for many Hollywood stars. We believe the painting spent virtually all of its life in California, before we brought it back to the UK.
