People Watching focuses on people and their stories. This is the essence of what is known as the Human Condition - it refers to all the things that are unique about being human. It is the search for one's purpose in life, the experience of birth, isolation, happiness, anger, sadness, joy, death, loss, love and the fact that unlike any other species, we are self-aware and acknowledge and reflect on the past.
It is a rich subject matter for art. They say that every picture tells a story - the question to ponder is whose story is it telling? Is it the story of the artist and why they painted a particular piece? Is it what is happening in the painting? Or perhaps it is the way the painting intersects with the viewer's own story. The truth is that it can be all of these at the same time, and more, and this explains the enduring power of art.
