Soap Street is an iconic street in Manchester. Sadly, it has now been partly demolished. Aitchison was lucky enough to photograph it while it was still intact. Unusually for Aitchison this photograph captures a plain sky. In this instance you can see the importance of that decision for it allows the viewer space to appreciate the detail within the buildings.
As soon as Peter saw the scene he knew he needed a ladder in order to be higher up. He went home, came back with the ladder and set up in the middle of the road much to the annoyance of the traffic.
It is well acknowledged that photography documents a moment in history. The act of capturing light means that you have in your hands a light from a time gone by; light that has touched the surface of someone or something in the past that perhaps doesn’t exist anymore. Aitchison has preserved this memory for us, not just to have in our minds but also in our lives.
