The Groves brothers were the founders of Salford Lads Club in 1903. It was purpose built to provide positive alternative outlets for youths & teenagers such as sports, arts and cultural and educational activities. The building was designed by the architect Henry Lord.
Over the years this building has provided solid foundations for many young people and this certainly comes across in this photograph’s composition. The building appears strong, safe, protected and yet quaint and unintimidating; everything that would be important to the young men it helped.
Many figures in popular culture, notably The Smiths have given voice to this iconic building, but Aitchison's vision lets it speak for itself.
