Aitchison had to stand in the middle of a busy road to capture this timeless shot. The world passes by these gates, often without even a second look and yet Peter makes our whole world (for the minutes we are observing this shot) about these redundant gates. The rust, the texture, the decaying bricks are inescapable and yet it is noticeable that they are remarkably intact.
Sad and lonely they stand, intimidated by the developments continuing around them. This is a similar concept to Chop House; it is as if Aitchison is documenting a community of forgotten buildings and reviving their voice.
