Mathura Man was wandering the streets of Mathura, India. Aitchison did his usual trick of showing him the camera and smiling. The man was struggling and so afterwards Peter gave him some money for food which was enough to feed him for the next few days.
Henri Cartier Bresson said that “a photograph is neither taken nor seized by force. It offers itself up. It is the photo that takes you. One must not take photos.” This is precisely the method through which this photograph was taken and the result is an honest depiction of a man’s character that allows one a momentary insight into his humanity.
