Roger Hampson, Victory Mill, Bolton

Notes

Victory is one of the oldest areas in Halliwell, Bolton – about one mile from Bolton Town Hall – and is an area that Hampson painted many times. Almost the entire area of Victory was taken up by streets of terraced housing, surrounded by the huge Atlas Mills complex, consisting of 8 mills originally owned by The John Musgrave Spinning Company. Some of the buildings still stand, and the Bolton Steam Museum is housed in one of them on Mornington Road. This painting by Hampson is most likely from the vantage point of Chapman Street, looking down the hill to the Atlas complex.
